French Bulldog: Are They Right For You?

IS THE FRENCHIE RIGHT FOR YOU?

Choosing a dog for your home is an exciting task! But with more than 300 different breeds available, it may also seem like an impossible one. My Pawesome Frenchie is going to take the liberty of assuming that you are here because you are very interested in the possibility of having a French Bulldog in your life! I can personally vouch for French Bulldog ownership being a beautifully chaotic mix of snorts, zoomies, cuddles, chaos and love!

BEST OF THE FRENCHIES

As of this post, Frenchies have become the second most popular dog in America. It’s the breed of choice amongst A-Listers like Dwayne Johnson and Lady Gaga. And since they’re exceptional with small spas of this post, French Bulldogs have become the second most popular dog breed to own.  It’s the breed of choice amongst A-Listers like Dwayne Johnson and Lady Gaga. And since they’re exceptional with small spaces, they’re the perfect dog for city-dwellers – even those who live in shoebox apartments. I know this for a fact! Although I am currently in the process of purchasing a home, MPF HQ spent it’s formative years in an Etobicoke, Ontario apartment. Not ideal, but as they say- home is where the Frenchie is!

Although they don’t need a large backyard to play in, it’s always good to have a large outdoor space nearby for playtime, albeit they won’t stay out for too long. French Bulldogs are known to have low energy and low excitability. This is perfect for anyone that doesn’t like dogs that incessantly bark. If you’re looking for a homebody dog, then the nap king extraordinaire Frenchie might very well be the one to consider for you! Their loving, cute, and affectionate personalities make them suitable for families as well as making great travel companions. French Bulldogs adapt well to all kinds of situations, provided they have the comfort and safety of their human helping them!

A FEW THINGS TO THINK ABOUT

Popularity. Popularity. Rising popularity has made French Bulldogs hard to find, not to mention an expensive initial investment. With a price range of $4,000 CAD to as high as $25,000 CAD, this breed isn’t for everyone. And while a local seller may offer a puppy for considerably less money, you do get what you pay for. Be sure to research whom you’re buying from. Having heard all of the horror stories of scam artists, backyard breeders, and the like, I created My Pawesome Frenchie to break the stereotype of “French Bulldog Breeder.” I pride myself on ethically breeding my dogs and treating them beyond humanely- I treat them as well as my own. If you know me personally or you follow me on YouTube or Instagram, you’ll know my fur kids, Kifli & Fuli, are my world. If you don’t already follow us, I encourage you to check us out!

French Bulldogs Can Be Expensive

Laidback personality. Long walks at the park, early morning cross country jogs, or a summer’s mountain hike. These are the things you likely won’t be doing with French Bulldogs. Something to consider when exploring which dog breed is right for you, be sure to consider their energy level and how it matches (or is opposite of) your own.  French Bulldogs love hanging out. Whether it’s around the house or apartment, be it relaxing or cuddling. These laid-back dogs are all about chilling above everything else. If they have their human, they’re happy!

Health issues. Like all dogs, French Bulldogs have their own list of potential health concerns. Frenchies are VERY sensitive to certain diets. This is more likely caused by sensitivity to a protein source. If your Frenchie has issues with their diet, try switching to a different type of protein. Some of the more common health concerns with this breed are ear infection, conjunctivitis, and skin problems, as well as IVDD and the needing of soft palette surgery to enhance breathing and quality of life. My male dog, Fuli, went through this and I made a video all about it that you can check out on YouTube

Health insurance. It’s always recommended to purchase pet insurance. When choosing an insurance plan, make sure to research and pick the one that’s right for you. It’s also important to purchase a plan when your dog is young and healthy. Just like any other health insurance, the premium can increase if your dog has a pre-existing condition or is above a certain age.

  1. […] After shortlisting a few French Bulldog breeders, reach out and get to know them. For me, I send out a questionnaire by email after a family reaches out. The email will come with some information about who I am, the process, prices, what is included, etc). Once it’s returned, I arrange for a FaceTime interview to get to know one another. If you’re chatting with French Bulldog breeders, have a list of questions prepared and go in having done your own due diligence and research on the breed. You should have already determined if the French Bulldog breed is right for you or not. I have a blog about titled “French Bulldog: is right for you?” […]
